{"id":20435,"date":"2013-12-10T12:37:53","date_gmt":"2013-12-10T18:37:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hsni.org\/?page_id=20435"},"modified":"2013-12-10T12:40:11","modified_gmt":"2013-12-10T18:40:11","slug":"options-for-re-homing-an-animal-on-your-own","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.hsni.org\/?page_id=20435","title":{"rendered":"Options for Re-Homing an Animal on Your Own"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsni.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/30147-425x282-Cats_and_Dogs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-20440\" alt=\"30147-425x282-Cats_and_Dogs\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hsni.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/30147-425x282-Cats_and_Dogs-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.hsni.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/30147-425x282-Cats_and_Dogs-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.hsni.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/30147-425x282-Cats_and_Dogs.jpg 425w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The Humane Society of North Iowa is considered a \u201cno-kill\u201d facility, meaning that we do not euthanize animals in our care based on the length of time they&#8217;ve been with us or due to a lack of space.\u00a0 While this is great news for the animals, it means that our kennels are almost always full and we often don\u2019t have room for animals that are brought in without an appointment.<\/p>\n<p>We maintain a Waiting List of animals that are waiting to come into our care.\u00a0 When an animal is adopted, we pull up the next name on the list and call it in to our shelter.\u00a0 Depending on the species and time of year, this can sometimes take as little as a few days or sometimes several months.<\/p>\n<p>If you are in a situation where you cannot add an animal to our Waiting List and need to re-home now, listed below are some options you may consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you have found a stray animal and your community does not have an animal control service, call your local Police Department (if you live in town), Sheriff\u2019s Department (if you live outside city limits) and local Veterinarians to ask if they are able to help in your situation.<\/li>\n<li>The Globe Gazette newspaper in Mason City offers a free 2-day ad in their \u201cGiveaway Guide.\u201d\u00a0 To ensure your pet goes to a good home, you should be prepared to \u201cscreen\u201d interested callers.\u00a0 Ask us if you need advice.<\/li>\n<li>Many area grocery stores, convenience stores and community centers have bulletin boards where they allow individuals to post notices about giving away a pet. (Most require that you ask permission before you post something though, so double-check!)\u00a0 Be sure to include pictures and point out your pets best attributes! (Are they spayed\/neutered? House-broken? Declawed?
