Earlier this month, we closed down our dog kennel rooms to mitigate the spread of a respiratory illness that had affected several dogs. The illness, treated easily with antibiotics, was contagious and we didn't want it to any more dogs to get sick.I'm happy to report that closing those rooms worked! The handful of dogs that were sick, have finished their course of antibiotics and are all feeling better!! YAY!!!!
The shelter dogs are doing well, but they have really missed the people that come to walk and visit with them! PLEASE help our dogs feel EVEN BETTER by coming out to volunteer!!
KEEP EVERYONE SAFE! When visiting the shelter, please remember to:
1. Sanitize hands in between handling each dog
2. Dip your shoes in the bleach bath outside of the dog kennel doors
3. Make sure your pets at home are healthy and current on their vaccines
The Humane Society of North Iowa is open Tues-Fri (10-4) and Sat (10-2) More information about volunteering, as well as info about adopting, can be found on our website: www.hsni.org

TAILS OF SUCCESS: Here's an update from Chuggs (formerly The Rock)...Hello, this is Ethan, and we are sincerely grateful for you guys allowing us to adopt Chuggs (The Rock)! He has settled in incredibly well and we love him so much! We make sure to spoil him with lots of cuddles and love. He has such an awesome personality and is very caring, but also talkative and playful! Here are some pics that you guys might like of the first month of his lifetime with us!
Thanks again,
Ethan and Estrella ... See MoreSee Less

Do you care for feral cats? Cooler weather is coming - be prepared.STRAW will reflect body heat back to a cat and repels moisture. Straw is tough, thick, dry leftover stalks from crops. It's lightweight and golden in color. Straw has a hollow center which makes for great insulation (just like double pane windows).
DO NOT USE HAY (OR blankets) for bedding in outdoor cat shelters. Hay is green and heavy. Hay is typically used to feed animals, like horses. It absorbs moisture, making it damp, cold and uncomfortable for cats, and has the potential to get moldy (or frozen solid!).
Remember, >>hay is for horses and straw is for strays.<< ... See MoreSee Less

TAILS OF SUCCESS: Here's an update from Gamble...Gamble made it home safely and is very loved already! Our labs aren’t necessarily sure about him yet but gamble showed them he belongs here just as much as they do! Our kitty was pretty welcoming. He has already made himself at home and is the perfect addition. Not a horrible introduction! He is a great addition to the family and we even got him some toys for the drive home which just seemed to fit his name perfectly a sign he was what we needed! He got a new favorite toy his carrot and he got to enjoy our new cat tree! Thank you again and we will be sure to update further down the road.
Thank you!
