Animals for Adoption

To adopt an animal from the Humane Society of North Iowa, we ask that you submit an Adoption Application. This can be done before you visit the shelter (helps to expedite the process, especially for those who are traveling), or you can submit your application after you meet the animal you’d like to adopt.

Although this listing is kept as current as possible, you are encouraged to please visit our shelter in person to see all available animals!

Please keep in mind that the Humane Society of North Iowa is considered a “no-kill” facility; meaning that we DO NOT euthanize animals due to a lack of space or due to the length of time they’ve been with us.  When an animal comes to our shelter, they stay with us until they are adopted!

When you adopt an animal from us, you are really saving two lives; Not only the animal you’ve just adopted, but also the life of a second animal that can come into our shelter because you’ve just opened up a kennel space for them!

When considering adding a new pet to your family remember, “Don’t shop….ADOPT!”

Have you found an animal you would like make your new best friend?  GREAT!  The next step is to fill out an Adoption Application.  All of our Adoption Applications can be found here.

We don’t operate on a “first come, first serve” basis.  Every new animal will spend several days in our shelter so that families and individuals can have the chance to submit an application if interested.  We then review all applications and select the home that will best fit an animal’s needs.  This is sometimes a difficult process as we often will have multiple applications for just one animal!

Thank you for choosing to rescue an animal in need and thank you for choosing the Humane Society of North Iowa!

Cabin Fever Cats

Cabin fever

The Humane Society of North Iowa is considered a “no-kill” shelter, meaning that when an animal comes in to the shelter it stays here until it is adopted.  While this is great news for the animals, it means our kennels are almost always full!

To encourage the adoption of the cats that have been in the shelter for more than a year, the Humane Society of North Iowa has a program called “Cabin Fever Cats”.  Cabin Fever Cats will have a reduced adoption fee.  Cats that have been in the shelter for more than one year will have a reduced fee of $50.00.  Cats that have been in the shelter more than 2 years will have a reduced fee of $25.00.

The regular adoption fee for an adult cat is $125.00, so the reduced fee is a considerable cost savings.  Cabin Fever Cats will have the same veterinarian services provided with their adoption: spay/neuter surgery, rabies vaccination, feline leukemia testing, and any other needed vet services.  Applicants will still need to meet the standard adoption protocols.

Bonded Buddies

Bonded Buddies

Sometimes animals come in together, or form a bond while they are in our care, and they are dependent on each other to be the best version of themselves.  When this happens, we bond the pair and they become Bonded Buddies.  All Bonded Buddies are adopted together for just one adoption fee.

Animals that are part of our Bonded Buddies program will have a special designation online and on their kennel cards.

Please inquire with shelter staff or check our animal listings online to see if we have any “Bonded Buddies” in the shelter currently.
