Today is National Lost Dog Awareness Day!! As the managers of the Mason City Stray Animal Shelter, we handle every dog that is picked up as stray in our community when they are brought to the shelter. Sadly, a majority of these dogs are not microchipped and are not wearing any kind of tag or identification that helps us reunite them with their family. :( Worse, the few that DO have identification sometimes have outdated owner information or have phone numbers listed that are no longer in service. Yikes. Dogs get loose. We get it. But here are some tips to reduce the risk of them going missing OR increase the chance of being reunited if they do go missing:1. Get your dog spayed or neutered! Seriously. The majority of dogs that enter the stray shelter are intact and have likely wandered off "looking for love in all the wrong places." ;) Aside from the health benefits, altering your animal will likely reduce their desire to wander. 2. Get your dog microchipped! Most vet clinics offer this service. Microchips are the size of a grain of rice and are implanted just below the skin behind your dog's head. Your information is registered in a national database (it is important to keep this updated!). IF your dog goes missing, most shelters and vet offices have scanners to scan your dog and read the microchip and then are able to contact you. 3. Get ID tags for your dog! It's a good idea to keep your dog's current rabies vaccine tag (this vaccine is required by law in our state) AND an ID tag with your contact info on your dog at all times.4. IF your dog goes missing (and you are in Mason City), file a Missing Animal Report (www.masoncity.net/forms.aspx?fid=520&catid=481) This notifies Animal Control, the Mason City Stray Animal Shelter and the Humane Society of North Iowa and we will be on the lookout for your lost dog. Keep your dog safe and keep your dog HOME where he belongs!! <3 <3 ... See MoreSee Less6 days ago

My name is Jenny and I am a fun-loving gal! I’m very popular here at the shelter because I get along with everyone and am super social with people and other dogs. True to my breed, I have a lot of energy and love to play and go for walks. I’d be a great fit in an active family! Please call the Humane Society of North Iowa at 641-423-6241 for more information. ... See MoreSee Less1 week ago
