We have some sad news to share...One of our favorite shelter dogs Remi, is an 11 year old beautiful Akita, that, in spite of her age, was quite active and enjoyed going for walks, particularly with her favorite volunteer, Charlotte. At 100 lbs, she was a loving gentle giant who loved belly rubs and being outdoors.
Due to her age, she had arthritis in her spine. Last week, we noticed she was walking differently and rushed her to our vet who discovered she had a ruptured disk in her spine. We placed her into foster care in the hopes that things would improve with rest and medications. Unfortunately, things took a turn over the weekend when she lost the use of her back legs. Another trip to the vet confirmed the worst: permanent paralysis. She would never regain mobility.
With tears in our eyes, we made the painful decision to let Remi go in peace and with dignity through humane euthanasia at our veterinarian's office. Multiple shelter staff, and her foster mom, sat on the floor with Remi stroking her beautiful fur, giving her kisses and telling her how much we loved her as she closed her eyes one last time and slipped away peacefully.
It's been a very emotional process for all of us at the shelter. Remi was a beautiful girl who came into our care as a stray from a not so great situation and, I guess thankfully, was not reclaimed. But, due to her age (11 years old), she was overlooked and remained in the shelter. Regardless of all this, she was joyful and happy. She made so many friends here with staff and volunteers alike and had a very special bond with her favorite volunteer Charlotte.
We wished we could have given Remi more time and the forever family she deserved. But things don’t always work out how we hope and this is the reality of shelter life sometimes. We feel at peace that we were able to release Remi from her pain and that she knew how loved she was by all of us. We will miss you and will never forget you Remi.

TAILS OF SUCCESS: Here's an update from Chantilly...Chantilly took a day or two to acclimate, but is now running the house. She is a combination of lovable and cute. I’m so happy that she reached out to me through her cage door. She will have a good life with me. I’ll see to that!
Thank you for everything you do at the Society. I’ll keep you posted on our events.
